... Pour respecter la chronologie. Epaulé par les Fantômaticks (groupe énigmatique au personnel incertain puisque de savoureux pseudos (Terri Zabinovitch, Valentino Zab ... ) côtoient sans complexe un Olaf Frap Dür (à la batterie évidemment), un DJ RsZ ou un Fête Nat De la Souffrière ... ), Zaboïtzeff nous a manigancé une myriade d'ambiances qui se mettent en branle, se déroulent et se froissent par l'interruption de nouvelles plages: à l'image de ces quatre reprises des Beatles (ah ! le grayeux Come Together !), se télescopent des musiques tournées vers l' ailleurs, un exotisme de l'étrange : vallées moites, bords de mer exténuants, organismes anesthésiés, crépuscules désertiques, villes endormies ou mortes, horreurs boréales ...
Moins sombres peut-être, qu'à l'habitude, comme des musiques autour du vide qui règne
lorsqu' il ne reste personne, mais où tout a déjà eu lieu, où l' air est plein de ces vies qui s'y sont agitées, encore peuplé de fantômes.

Neuf ans après ses premières frasques digitalisées en compagnie de son orchestre à cordes robotiques, le Dr. ZAB revient hanter nos platines avec une nouvelle moisson de thèmes tout aussi variés les uns que les autres. Cette fois-ci, il s'est entouré d'un nouvel orchestre, FANTÔMATICK BANDS, dont la particularité est d'être constitué pour moitié de mortels sans doute échappés de la charrette de l'Ankou, et de spectres fiers de leur condition, parmi lesquels on retrouve le célèbre chanteur Terri ZABINOVITCH, l'immanquable bassiste Valentino ZAB, l'innénarrable batteur Olaf FRÄP DÜR, et le remarquable violoniste kobaïen Ühnn KORDÄSOHNARCK !!... Ah la fine équipe que voilà ! C'est l'orchestre auquel on ne rêvait plus !

Il n'est évidemment pas facile de savoir si les différents timbres vocaux et les instruments divers et variés qui se font entendre ici et là sont authentiques ou ne sont que l'ombre d'eux-mêmes, et ce n'est d'ailleurs pas le but ! Le Dr. ZAB ne recule devant aucune illusion samplée pour parfaire ses opérations de chirurgie sonore esthétique et ce faisant nous livre un bouquet pour le moins éclectique et dense qui pourra paraître décousu, inégal, mais certainement pas figé sur un seul regard. Ce violon chinois qui nous accueille d'entrée de jeu ( Ainsi écrivait Marco Polo ), perturbé par la pratique épistolaire, un rien saccadée, de l'explorateur, est-il réel ou virtuel ? Toujours est-il que sa capacité à planter un décor envoûtant est confondante. Et notre bon Dr. ZAB de nous conter ainsi nombre de visions nocturnes, alimentées d'inquiétudes baroques, de fantaisies obscures, de souvenirs futuristes et de méditations frissonnantes...

Rien n'est jamais totalement noir, ni toujours complètement rose, ou bleu, ou vert, ou autre, dans les histoires du DR. ZAB, les couleurs passent en coup de vent, comme des empreintes spectrales, se métamorphosant inlassablement pour mieux nous transporter d'un coin à l'autre du globe bariolé ou du bunker agité des émotions humaines. De la cahotique Rhumba des boiteux à la souriante Petite danse italienne sans oublier la Fanfare au pas pachydermique, le folklore du monde subit un check-up malicieux, et comme si cela ne suffisait pas, notre brave médecin en rajoute dans l'irrévérence en «rythm-boxant» un Blues grégorien et en prononçant des imprécations hérétiques ( Révolution ) ; et, contre toute attente, «frankensteinise» pas moins de quatre morceaux du répertoire des «Fab'Four» ! Insolites et déconcertantes, les musiques rassemblées ici et ainsi font figures de bande originale de quelque oeuvre cinématographique imaginaire. Un morceau - certainement le plus riche et le plus palpitant - a du reste été baptisé Le Film manquant. A charge pour chacun de trouver les images qui vont avec. Et n'allez surtout pas demander quand les FANTÖMATICK BANDS seront visibles en concert !

Thierry Zaboitzeff released part II of the sound excursion Dr. Zab in 2001. Part I – ‘Dr. Zab & his robotic strings orchestra’ – came out in 1992, while the Frenchman was still a member of Art Zoyd. ‘Dr. Zab Vol. 2’ was recorded by the Fantômatick Band, a Kammerrock formation of more than 20 musicians Zaboitzeff put together just for this album. At least the cd booklet leads you to believe this. If you read the booklet more closely, you will soon guess that behind the musicians’ strange names only one person is performing – Thierry Zaboitzeff. As with all of his solo albums, he alone is responsible for most of the sounds you hear, doing nearly all of the recording and mixing himself.

Of course it is possible that some of the wind and string sounds and some vocals don’t come from sampler, tape or from Zaboitzeff himself, and maybe a guest musician really does make a short (involuntary?) guest appearance. Be that as it may, as on part I, Zaboitzeff produces a very dense network of electronic keyboard and MIDI sounds, canned drums, some bass, various instrumental pieces, all kinds of sounds, snatches of speaking and singing voices and sampler pieces which all together sound musical and rich coming out of the speakers. Four very strange Beatles’ cover-versions are mixed in, sung by the master in his grunting-groaning voice.

The music’s atmosphere is floating and gloomy, recognizable by the sustained numbers from Art Zoyd’s electronic phase. Keyboard strings and bass insure Kammerrock interludes, oboe-like keyboard sounds create elegiac softness while the sounds of Arabic-Far East percussion and plucking instruments lend an ethno-touch, along with several exotic, unnamed voices. The music is at times somewhat strange and crooked, resounding and echoing freely and confusedly. Now and then the whole becomes simpler and ripples by in an unspectacular, almost shallow way (in ’Landregen’, for instance, which is very aptly named).

Those who are familiar with Zaboitzeff’s solo work and the work he did on the last Art Zoyd albums will recognize some similar themes. Apparently, Zaboitzeff likes to re-use old samples. It seems to me that he builds new pieces using fragments of old numbers, like playing with building blocks. Not that pieces are directly copied, but you get the feeling that you’ve heard diverse parts of ‘Dr. Zab Vol. 2’ before.

In that respect, ‘Dr. Zab Vol. 2’ does not offer anything new for Art Zoyd and Zaboitzeff connoisseurs. Listeners who like the Frenchman’s music will still like this album. Besides, this album is much more humorous than most of the others Zaboitzeff has produced. For instance, the strange grunting version of ‘Come Together’ is really cool!
